Parliamentarians want EU wide referendum

Many members of the European Parliament are in favour of a European wide referendum in 2009. Some Parliamentarians suggest that the referendum should be about the outcomes of

a newly and directly elected Convention.

This was the result of a discussion about the Reflection Phase within the Committee on Constitutional Affairs of the EU Parliament.

In June 2005, the European Heads of State called for a Reflection Phase, following the referendums in France and the Netherlands. Within the next year the EU institutions, including national parliaments, civic organisations and the citizens, intend to stimulate a debate on the Future of Europe. Even Commissioner Wallström works on a Communication Strategy to better involve the citizens in EU matters.
