A central aim of Democracy International is to strengthen democracy in the European Union.

Through our work we seek to promote the implementation of citizen participation and binding democratic instruments that give citizens a voice in European decision-making. 

Our European campaigns and projects focus on civil society network-building, political liaising, and grassroots activism.

Thematic focus include the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), a new democratic Convention, and the establishment of EU-wide referenda regarding major decisions. Other themes of Democracy International's EU-level work include lobby transparency, revision of the European electoral system, and right to information.
