New books on Direct Democracy

Brussels – A new handbook informs about the chances and limits of the European Citizens Initiative. This found its way into the EU Constitution due to the work of Democracy International, the IRI Europe and others.

No less than seven initiatives already refer to this instrument.

With its new Handbook, the Initiative & Referendum Institute Europe continues its efforts to offer know-how, background and analysis around one of the newest developments in direct democracy. The new Handbook, to be launched today at a Media Briefing in Brussels, features surveys and essays on the pan-European experience with citizens’ initiative rights, where no less than 20 states already have similar procedures as are now being proposed and even tried out within the EU.

Also available is the 2007 Edition of the Guidebook to Direct Democracy. It features:

  • Analysis & Opinion on new forms of participatory democracy worldwide
  • Essays about the everyday practice of modern democracy,
  • Facts & Presentations on direct democracy in Switzerland, Europe and the world, and
  • Special Surveys on Latin America, the Francophone world and German- speaking countries.
