Arjen Nijeboer is a journalist and NGO professional and has been actively campaigning for direct democracy since 1999. His biggest successes are the introduction of the facultative referendum in the Netherlands, the 2005 referendum on the EU Constitution and the introduction of the popular initiative in the city of Amsterdam. With Jos Verhulst, he co-wrote Direct Democracy: Facts and Arguments about the Introduction of Initiative and Referendum (Brussels, 2007), published in nine languages.
