We presented our idea for a World Citizens' Initiative at the International Civil Society Week in Belgrade, last spring.

Dear Friends,

We have had an exciting week in New York! On Wednesday, we presented our World Citizens’ Initiative proposal to ten missions at the UN at an event co-hosted by the Canadian, Swiss and Malaysian UN missions. We had a very interesting discussion and received lots of feedback that will help us in the upcoming campaign.

In the meantime, our alliance keeps growing. Over 100 civil society organisations from all over the world have already endorsed our campaign. We now have a good group of supporters to help us take this campaign to the next level. And of course we want to keep gathering support. Please share the campaign sign-on statement widely.

Last week, Inter Press Service also published an opinion piece by Andreas Bummel, from Democracy Without Borders, Lysa John from CIVICUS and Bruno Kaufmann from Democracy International on the need to give citizens a voice at the UN.

Finally, on Thursday we had our official ‘We the Peoples’ campaign kick-off event. It took place opposite the UN headquarters, as symbolic place to represent how citizens are being left at the fringes of the international decision-making. The launch was attended by over 60 representatives from civil society and the UN. You can see the pictures of the event here.

Democratically yours,

Caroline, Daniela, Andreas
