Maroš Šefčovič backs ECI App

18-07-2014

European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič has epxressed his strong support for Democracy International's fundraising campaign for an ECI App that will allow smartphone users to sign a European Citizens' Initiative with one single click. Maroš Šefčovič is responsible for the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI). During the past four years of his mandate he has witnessed the implementation of the ECI that became effective on 1 April 2012.

"The Commission has always been in favour of using the most up-to-date technology to help make the European Citizens' Initiative as user-friendly as possible.

The development of ECI apps that can be used on all smartphone platforms is for me therefore a logical and highly desired step forward.

I have always been convinced that the most successful ECIs will be those that maximise the potential of social media and mobile services. Allowing citizens to sign initiatives on the move is a key part of this, and has the potential to significantly increase the support for initiatives".
