Democracy Camp

31-08-2022

In a nutshell

The Democracy Camp was your five-day-intercultural exchange on democracy, sustainability, and intersectionality - and the interconnections between them. Our community of 60 young people up to the age of 25 from Germany, Switzerland, Czechia, Poland, France and Austria met up in Vallendar, Germany in September 2023.

What exactly does that mean?

We explored two guiding questions: What participation tools are available to me? And how can I use these tools to promote sustainability and inclusive societies?

Together, we identified a wide variety of democratic best practices in sustainability and justice. We expanded our understanding of political levels from the city to the UN and the role of the EU. And we learned how to successfully run our own projects in the future.

What activities did we engage in?

  • Digital kick-off on 22 August at 8 pm CET. Here, we collected ideas for topics, methods, and anything else that's important to you. After all, it was your Camp. And, of course, we got to know each other and the seven partner organisations from six countries!
  • Democracy Camp from 13 to 17 September! We were based in beautiful Vallendar, Germany, right at the river Rhine. Here, we enjoyed activities like World Cafés on participation methods for young Europeans in the different partner countries and the EU, a workshop on intersectionality with the Diversity Ambassadors from Mut-zu-Taten, and workshops on life skills like public speaking or fundraising.
  • From Vallendar we embarked on excursions to the UN Campus in Bonn and visited the Global Climate Strike in Koblenz on Democracy Day.
  • After the Camp: We published our ideas for improved youth participation and promising tools to foster sustainability and inclusive societies at different levels in the Youth Democracy Handbook, which we sent to decision-makers in Europe such as the 705 Members of the European Parliament.
