the global coalition for democracy

Democracy International turns 10!

Ten years ago Democracy International was officially founded. We can’t believe it has already been a decade. So much has happened in that time.

Time has flown by, and many of you have been with us for part of the way. We are so grateful for all of your support. On our tenth anniversary, we don't only want to celebrate our journey, but also yours! So join us for a direct democracy celebration looking back at our common history, but also forward to what direct democracy still has to offer!

3 July 2021

  • 15h00 - 17h30 CEST: Democracy International General Assembly (members only)

  • 18h00 -  18h45 CEST: How we got here and where we're going - modern direct democracy today

Welcome words by the Board of Democracy International

KEYNOTE: Democracy on Demand: A historical look at the use of referendums around the world. Professor Matt Qvortrup, Coventry University.

From Switzerland to Oregon and from Napoleon to Brexit. In this conversation with direct democracy expert Prof. Matt Qvortrup, we'll have a closer at how referendums have been used historically, how they have been won and how they have impacted public policy. Together, we'll look at what this means for the future of direct democracy globally. With direct democracy, can voters have their cake and eat it too?

- WHERE TO NEXT? How can democracy move forward, what are the challenges and what opportunities are presenting themselves? Democracy International's Board Members Mehdi Ben Mimoun (Tunisia), Jung-Ok Lee (South-Korea) & Joe Mathews (United States) present an idea for the future of democracy as seen from their country and region.

  • 18:45 - 20:00 CEST: Democracy Activist Speed Dating

Democracy International’s main mission is to connect people around the world who work for more direct democracy and citizen participation. During the second part of our birthday event, the spotlight is on you!
