Building the campaign for a more democratic EU

02-12-2013

Preparations for the launch of the campaign for a more democratic EU are proceeding apace, with the team in Berlin adding some new members, gathering more volunteers, developing strategy and generating materials.

Germany's "Der Spiegel" and other media recently reported that the European leaders are negotiating huge reforms to the way the EU works, including changes to monetary and banking policy. The EU treaties say that these kinds of changes must happen via a Convention process - where representatives from the EU, Members of European Parliament and every member state come together to examine and debate the proposals. But it seems that European leaders are doing everything they can to avoid a Convention - including finding ways to execute their agendas outside the formal treaty reform process - so that they can continue their negotiations away from the public eye.

The campaign aims to show overwhelming support for a Convention process that is democratic, transparent and participatory - an open debate about the future of Europe which involves all levels of society and all political standpoints.

Democracy Internationa's campaign team in Berlin is working on generating campaign tools that can be used to communicate the importance of joining together to call for a more democratic EU, with a democratic Convention process as a crucial first step. They are forming an alliance of civil society organisations, building a website and informational materials, fundraising, developing a program for volunteers, and making a strategy to get the message out across Europe.

It’s a busy, exciting time, with a lot to do and plan before the launch of the campaign in around March next year. Between talking to advertising creatives about big high-impact actions, working with designers to develop a functional and informative online-platform, and talking to political experts from organisations across Europe, they certainly have their work cut out for them!
